Is Your Compliance Only Skin Deep?

Every Facilities Manager knows that lax compliance can have grave consequences, from serious injury to large fines and reputational damage.

To maintain the highest standards of compliance policies and procedures must be understood, questioned and reviewed. Every contractor will have a range of policies, including Health and Safety and Environmental, but their application must be more than just ticking boxes. Implementation must be methodical, mirroring and matching your own policies and Corporate Social Responsibility goals to avoid conflict.

Staff vetting is an area where there is no room for error as these days immigration fraud is ever more sophisticated and punishment for non compliance more draconian. Ideally staff vetting processes will go above and beyond the UK Border agency’s statutory requirements and include checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Just as critically, high level compliance must trickle down to your contractor’s sub contractors, because their failure can reflect badly on your organisation just as badly.

Ideally your contractor will have tailored compliance documentation that is kept under constant review and integrates with your policies. All staff, including new starters should receive in depth, site specific training and ongoing promotion in a programme to encourage development. Updates and review dates should be identified within the KPIs to ensure systems identify and track the latest initiatives and legislation.

The result should be compliance that is behavioural, not simply a sheaf of documents, thereby protecting staff and your reputation.
