Financial turbulence causes all costs to be put under the microscope in the quest for savings. Quite rightly contract cleaning is not immune to this process.
Get cuts wrong and the consequences can be disproportionately negative though, sometimes ending up costing more than has been saved. This is no better demonstrated than when carpet deep cleans are cut, thereby shortening the life of the carpet. Even more serious can be insensitive cuts to a settled workforce, especially at an institution where security clearance is required. Start messing staff around and some will leave – it is not impossible to replace them but the six week security clearance procedure can play havoc with schedules.
The problem tends to arise when cuts are made blind, perhaps by the wrong person who does not understand the ramifications. Andrew Philpot, Managing Director of TemcoUK Facility Services has strong views on the most constructive way of handling cuts.
